There’s No Business Like Show Business at Dronfield Civic Hall this week

annie production shot 1000-1

The famous Irving Berlin anthem is from legendary musical Annie Get Your Gun and members of Dronfield Light Opera Group will be singing it full throttle in their new production of the show.

The musical tells the story of real-life character Annie Oakley, who was known as “little sure shot” because of her amazing prowess with a pistol and rifle. The backwoods girl was taken on by Buffalo Bill for his Wild West Show and was adopted by Indian warrior Chief Sitting Bull who wanted her to be his daughter.

As well as entrancing audiences across America Annie was lauded on numerous tours of Europe – the Wild West Show actually visited Sheffield in the early 1900s.

The title role is being taken by Jeannie Saxton, who has played many leading roles for the Society, including Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady. Playing opposite her as shooting champion Frank Butler is Andy Throssell, and veteran David Pierce takes the role of Buffalo Bill.

Producer is Katie Marshall Preece; choreographer is Andrea Powell and musical director is Karen Cook, who will also be conducting the 10-piece orchestra. Annie Get Your Gun has some memorable Irving Berlin songs including Anything You Can Do, Doin’ What Comes Natur’lly and I Got the Sun in the Morning.

But as producer Katie says: “We’re out to prove that there really is No Business Like Show Business!”

The show runs from May 21 to 25.
